Katalina Serenades
Jazz Vocalist
Bio
I remember when I was 3 or 4 years old, and my father bought me a pink microphone and speaker. I had him sit on my bed and watch me put on a concert. As a child I remember always idolizing Disney channel singers and how I wanted to sound exactly like them. They had beautiful voices and I loved listening to their music. I knew I always wanted to be a performer, and sound beautiful to others. In elementary school, we had to be in chorus for 4th and 5th grade. Although a lot of the kids agonized having to do it, I was more than happy to participate. I had already fallen in love with singing. As I started gaining a sense of independence and maturity at 9 years old, I realized that this was something I wanted to take seriously. And I performed that year with the entire 4th grade and auditioned for my first solo. It was the first time I had ever sang in front of anyone. It was so necessary, that I broke out of my shell and attempted at becoming the star I always dreamed of. I didn’t get the solo, but I did sing in front of people for the first time.
My approach
In middle school, I started understanding my sense of style and affiliations with the jazz genre. I discovered the icon that I would devote most of my life trying to attain the same glamour, sophistication and melodic voice. That was Marilyn Monroe. After Marilyn, I branched out to her forerunners of music. Frank Sinatra, Etta James, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughn, and the woman herself, Ella Fitzgerald. Ever since middle school, I have longed to be a jazz artist. To showcase myself as a melodic, classy, and lush performer. My name is Katalina, and I will be your serenader this evening.
